Electronic Documents
Turnaround time: Five (5) to Fourteen (14) business days, depending on the number of books in the queue.
Students must provide a print copy of the material to be scanned. Print copies can be submitted to Adaptive Programs in Young Hall, Room 830.
Textbooks must be new copies to ensure the best quality scans. TAEVIS cannot accept used textbooks for scanning. If the material is a photocopy (course packets, journal articles, out of print books, etc.) the quality of the scan will vary with the quality of the photocopies.
Binding materials (book spines, staples, glue, etc.) will be removed to allow the use of a high-speed scanner.
Scanned images will be OCR'd into text and saved as .kes files, a format appropriate for use with the Kurzweil Reading System.
The original print pages and a CD containing the accessible electronic files will be returned to Adaptive Programs. Students may collect completed materials from the Adaptive Programs Office in Young Hall, Room 830.
Braille Documents
Turnaround time: Varies with length and complexity of the material. Minimum turnaround time is 72 hours.
Textbooks, lab manuals, workbooks, solutions manuals, and other long documents are typically transcribed and provided to the student on a week-by-week basis as the semester progresses. TAEVIS staff members monitor the course syllabus and the workload to ensure that materials are completed and delivered in time for classroom use.
Due to the substantial planning required for transcription, TAEVIS obtains print copies of materials to be brailled.
Smaller items (handouts, overheads, readings, etc.) will be transcribed throughout the semester as they are made available.
Completed braille materials will be delivered to a centrally located collection point for student pickup. This is currently in the ALPS Lab, Rm. 111, Stewart Center. Materials cannot be delivered to residence halls or classrooms.
